Who can apply for family benefits in Germany?
You can apply for Kindergeld in Germany if you:
- Are raising children and are employed in Germany (working under German employment conditions, self-employed, or seasonal workers)*
- Have children under 18 years old, or up to 25 years old if they are continuing their education (until the child starts working; in the case of a documented disability, there is no age limit)
- Have worked in Germany for a minimum of 6 months (183 days)
- Have earned 90% of your total income from Germany in a calendar year
- Do not exceed allowable income limits from outside Germany
*You do not need to be insured in Germany to receive family benefits. You can receive benefits for the last 6 months from the date of application.
Kindergeld - Key Information
Important facts about family benefits in Germany
Kindergeld is paid regardless of the parent's income but depends on the number of children. As of July 2019, the benefit amounts are:
- For the first and second child: €204
- For the third child: €210
- For each additional child: €235
The amount of the benefit may change, and an increase is planned from 2021. Our company will ensure that all necessary documents are gathered and the application is submitted to Familienkasse.
Elterngeld
Elterngeld – Childbirth Allowance
Elterngeld is a benefit that can be obtained if the parent or parents worked in Germany before the birth of the child. The benefit is paid for 12 to 14 months (depending on the number of parents applying). The application must be submitted within 3 months of the child’s birth. The conditions for receiving the benefit include:
- Parental income must not exceed €500,000 combined, or €250,000 for a single parent
- The amount of the benefit depends on the parent's income and place of residence (for those living in Poland: €300; in Germany: up to €1,800)
- It is possible to receive a sibling bonus (Geschwisterbonus)
